Wednesday Words: Initiative

I've been reading Wednesday Word posts from The Turkey Runner for a while now, and finally decided to join in on the link-up hosted by Deb Runs.

Deb Runs

This week's word is Initiative.

This is something I have never struggled with. Well, never is maybe a strong word, but I've always been a pretty driven person. If I say I'm going to do something, I do it. I get stuff done. In life and in running.

Yes, that means getting up at 4:45am to get my runs done. Yes, that means sticking to my training schedule. Because if I don't make myself do it, no one else is going to force me.

Lately, because of my ongoing shin/medial tibialis/soleus injury, this actually has been somewhat of a difficulty for me. Should I throw in the towel for the marathon this year? Should I alter my training plans? I certainly don't want to injure myself worse.

But after a lot of back and forth in my head (thankfully not out loud. I'm sure that would look interesting), I decided to keep at my training as best as I could, whether that meant lowering my mileage, running more easy miles, and maybe skipping some of the workouts in exchange for an easy run. I've also been doing quite a bit of research on different stretches, taping, deep tissue massage, etc.

I'm not going to give up, and I'm not going to take this lying down. The good news is that my massage therapist thinks that I'm going to be ok and I don't need to come back unless I feel I need it. Also, my leg is doing much better. Will it be perfect by race day? Who knows, but I'm doing all I can to get myself there.

Where are you taking initiative in your life? Link up with Deb and tell us about it!

  1. Oohh...I love the quote about being terrified of regret. That says it all! I hope your leg heals quickly so you can get back to doing what you want. Happy Training!

  2. Stick with the low mileage cross training. There's more than one way to get across the finish line!

  3. I've had my share of tibial and foot injuries this past year or so it's not fun at all. Sometimes you do have to put your race plans on hold to let it heal. Hope you are feeling better soon. I have no doubt you will be back out there stronger than ever

  4. So glad I found you through the link up! What a unique blog name! I love it! It sounds like you know exactly what needs to be done to keep you on the right track with your training. I do hope your leg gets better! Interesting you mentioned massages, I have 11 miles on the schedule next weekend and as a treat I've scheduled a massage afterwards. I've only had a few paid ones in my lifetime and only a couple since I have been running. I think I'm missing out so I hope to take some initiative to change that! ;)

    1. I love getting regular massages, although I don't do them too often because it's a bit pricey. But these were "needed", so I didn't mind spending the money!

  5. Injuries are no fun, but it sounds like you've got a good handle on it. It's smart to change up your training plan to allow that injury to heal. Good luck!

I'm so happy to have you participating in Wednesday Word! Thanks for linking up!

  7. I'm glad you decided to link up!! Training for a race and staying healthy during that training definitely takes a lot of initiative. I'm glad things are feeling better, and glad you were able to adjust your training accordingly. Fingers crossed!!
